Canon AE1 Program: A Great Film Camera for Beginners and Experts

The Canon AE1 Program came out five years after the original Canon AE1 became a huge hit. By then, many photographers wanted a new feature called program mode. This setting lets the camera choose both the shutter speed and the lens opening (aperture) for you—so you just point and shoot.

Canon listened and added this helpful feature in the Canon AE1 Program. It kept everything people loved about the first model but added full automatic shooting. Now, users could pick between two ways to take pictures:

One where you choose the shutter speed

Or program mode, where the camera chooses everything for you

This made the Canon AE1 Program perfect for both beginners and more experienced photographers.

Canon also improved how the camera feels. The grip was better and easier to hold, just like on the Canon A-1. The camera could also work with Canon’s Motor Drive MA, which let you take multiple pictures quickly, one after the other.

Inside the viewfinder, bright LED lights showed your settings. These lights helped you see what the camera was doing, even in low light.

To make everything work smoothly, Canon upgraded the camera’s tech. The Canon AE1 Program added a third electrical contact, helping it work better with new gear. Canon also upgraded the Power Winder, naming it the Power Winder A2. This made shooting fast photos even easier. 

Thanks to these smart upgrades, the Canon AE1 Program became a favorite camera for many people. It was simple enough for beginners but powerful enough for pros. Whether you were just learning or already had years of experience, this camera made it easy to take amazing pictures.

 

Canon AE1 Program Features: What Makes This Camera Special

 

Easy Handling and Motor Options

The Canon AE1 Program has a special grip on the right side that makes it comfortable to hold, just like Canon's A-1 camera. If you want to take lots of pictures quickly, you can attach Canon's Motor Drive MA, which shoots multiple photos automatically. Canon also made this camera work with two different power winders - the original Power Winder A and a newer, faster Power Winder A2. Inside the viewfinder, small LED lights show you important camera information.

Focusing Screen You Can Change Yourself

One great feature of the Canon AE1 Program is that you can change the focusing screen yourself - no need to take it to a repair shop like with some other cameras. The camera comes with a split-image and microprism screen that makes focusing easy. Canon also made seven other focusing screen types you could buy separately.

The focusing screen on this camera is brighter than any previous Canon manual focus camera. This means you can focus more easily even when using slower lenses (up to f/5.6). Canon used the same focusing screen design that they put in their top-of-the-line New F-1 camera.

Shutter and Flash Performance

The Canon AE1 Program uses an older style cloth shutter that can shoot as fast as 1/1000 of a second. When using flash, the fastest speed is 1/60 of a second. While this shutter works well, it needs more maintenance over time compared to newer metal shutter designs that came later.

Power and Reliability

The camera runs on one alkaline battery (types 4SR44, PX28A, A544, K28A, V34PX, 4LR44, or L544). Because the Canon AE1 Program has more electronic parts for its automatic features, some repair technicians find it trickier to fix than simpler cameras from the same time period.

However, when this camera first came out, its automatic features and simple controls helped many people try SLR cameras for the first time. It made photography more accessible to everyday users who wanted great pictures without learning complicated settings.

Returns, Refunds & Restocking Fees
  • What is your return policy window? You have 90 days from the date you receive your product to request a return if it does not meet your expectations.
  • Can I get a full 100% refund? Yes, if you request the return within Days 1–30 and the item is in the exact same condition received (unworn, unused, unaltered, with original packaging). There are exceptions outlined bellow for "New" items.
  • Is there a fee for returning an item after 30 days? Yes. Returns requested within Days 31–90 are accepted, but a 20% restocking fee will be deducted from your final refund.
  • Are there restocking fees for opened "New" items? Yes. A minimum 15% restocking fee applies if a "New" item is returned used, with missing packaging/accessories, altered/torn retail boxes, or shows signs of handling and cosmetic wear.
  • Which items are completely non-returnable? Consumables such as batteries, instant film packs (Instax, Polaroid) and film rolls cannot be returned under any circumstances if the factory seal or plastic wrap is broken.
